Welcome to The Ruminant, a blog that wonders what perfect farming looks like, and that offers farmers a chance to spread some good ideas around. The blog's main focus is a called Farm Glance, which invites you to submit photos and descriptions of your approach to any farming- or gardening-related task on your farm. No approach is too ordinary, since the way you do something might not be obvious to another farmer.
The blog's got some other stuff too. I produce a podcast during the farming off-season, and will be producing weekly episodes between November and April of each year. There are book reviews, gear reviews, and the occasional essay. But mainly I'm trying to create a space for farmers to share photos. So please consider sending me a photo from your farm or garden. You can do so by reading The Ruminant's submission guidelines. And I welcome your comments and suggestions. You can post them around the site or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
It's food for thought for farmers. I hope you enjoy the blog, and if you do, please tell your friends about it!
I have been interested in developing a site like this for a while, and then in 2010 a group of four friends that included me did a farm-focused bicycle tour of Oregon, California, Eastern Canada, and New England. We visited over 25 farms and encountered countless tweaks and innovations that our hosts were using to get the job done. We blogged about our experiences, which was all sorts of fun. After the trip, I set about creating this site, and here we are.
I don't think there's much else to tell you, except that I'm an organic farmer in the Okanagan Valley, BC, who's hoping to create a decent site that farmers can visit to swap ideas. I'd love to hear your thoughts about the site, which you can send me by emailing me at email@example.com or by just leaving a comment on the blog.
